YNAB Alternatives for Couples (2026): 7 Honest Options

YNAB alternatives for couples: EveryDollar, Goodbudget and Actual Budget for a similar method, Monarch and Rocket Money for less work, and EvenUS.

By · Updated

If you like YNAB's way of budgeting but not the price, EveryDollar, Goodbudget and Actual Budget follow a similar give-every-dollar-a-job idea, and all three can be used without paying. If you like the price but not the effort, Monarch, Rocket Money and Quicken Simplifi do more of the work for you. EvenUS is a different kind of pick: it does not budget for you, but it splits shared costs fairly, including by income, and looks at how time and chores are shared.

EvenUS is our own app. Every fact about the other apps comes from their own websites, help centers and US App Store listings, checked on 3 November 2026, and ratings are the US App Store figures shown that day. Prices change, so check before you pay.

Why couples look beyond YNAB

YNAB is built around a method: you plan where your money goes before you spend it, together. It runs on iOS, Android, the web and Apple Watch, and up to six people can share one subscription with their own logins. It costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year. Its site offers 34 days free with no card if you sign up there; its App Store listing mentions a 30-day trial.

Couples who leave usually say one of three things. It costs more than they want to pay for a budget. It asks for more regular attention than one or both of them will give. Or one partner loves it and the other never opens it, so the budget becomes one person's job, which is its own kind of mental load. Each of those points to a different alternative.

1. EveryDollar: closest method with a free version

Best for: couples who like zero-based budgeting and want to start without paying.

EveryDollar, from Ramsey Solutions, has a free version with no time limit that works on a computer, phone or tablet. Premium adds bank connect, which pulls transactions into your budget; after a 14-day trial for new users it is $79.99 a year or $17.99 a month. Its FAQ says the household feature lets couples manage one budget together while signing in with separate emails. The page does not say whether that is free or Premium, so check before you count on it.

If you mainly used YNAB to plan the month and are happy typing transactions in, the free version may be all you need.

2. Goodbudget: envelopes, shared, with a free plan

Best for: couples who think in envelopes and want both phones on the same budget.

Goodbudget runs on the web, Android and iPhone, and its App Store listing describes it as made for sharing a budget with a spouse. The Free Forever plan gives you 10 regular envelopes, 10 more envelopes, 1 account, 2 devices and 1 year of history, which is enough for two phones. Premium is $10 a month or $80 a year on its site ($9.99 and $79.99 in the App Store), with unlimited envelopes, 5 devices and automatic bank sync for US banks only.

3. Actual Budget: the open-source option

Best for: couples who want an envelope-style budget and control of their own data.

Actual Budget is free, MIT-licensed software, actively maintained (its latest release on GitHub was published on 2 November 2026). You can download it for Windows, macOS or Linux, or run its server and open it in a browser. It offers multi-device sync and optional end-to-end encryption. US bank sync goes through SimpleFIN, a separate service at $1.50 a month or $15 a year. For two separate logins you need an OpenID provider set up, so expect an evening of setup rather than a quick download.

4. Monarch: less hands-on, same price monthly

Best for: couples who want a full shared view without a strict method.

Monarch works on the web, iOS and Android, brings joint and separate accounts into one view, and gives each partner a login at no extra cost. It is $14.99 a month, the same as YNAB, or $99.99 a year, after a 7-day trial. Its couples page notes that both partners see all accounts and transactions. Our Monarch vs YNAB comparison goes through the trade-off, and Monarch alternatives covers the rest of this field.

5. Rocket Money: least effort

Best for: couples who want to see spending and subscriptions, not plan every dollar.

Rocket Money has a free plan. Premium lets you choose what to pay on a sliding scale (its own guide says typically $7 to $14 a month), and Premium+ is $15 a month. New Premium members get a 7-day trial. A second login for a partner is a Premium feature. It is a tracker more than a budgeting method, which is exactly why some YNAB leavers like it.

6. Quicken Simplifi: for one planner and one viewer

Best for: couples where one person runs the money and the other wants to see the plan.

Simplifi runs on the web, iOS and Android and connects to US and Canadian accounts. You can share with one other person through a sharing space. Its support page says only annual plans are sold and there is no free trial, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on direct purchases. Its site showed promotional pricing when we checked, so see their site for the current price.

Where EvenUS fits

Best for: couples whose budget is fine but who still argue about whether the way they share costs, and the work at home, is fair.

EvenUS is our app. It is not a budgeting method: it has simple monthly budgets for the categories you choose, and can import a statement file from your bank, but it never connects to a bank and does not plan every dollar. What it does do is split shared costs four ways (by income, evenly, ending up with the same, or splitting what is spare) and put each partner's free hours side by side, with one suggested swap a week.

Free hours for both partners, with the working underneath.

If the YNAB problem in your home was that one of you ended up doing all the budgeting, EvenUS counts that kind of planning as time too. It only works for two people, needs both of you to take part, and is still in closed testing, so it is not on the app stores yet. One subscription covers both of you: a 7-day free trial with no card, then $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year (USD reference prices, set per region by the app stores). Try the fair split calculator to see the idea first.

Which one should you pick?

  • "We like the method, not the price." EveryDollar or Goodbudget, both with free tiers.
  • "We want our data on our own server." Actual Budget.
  • "We want the app to do more of the work." Monarch, Rocket Money or Simplifi.
  • "Only one of us ever budgets." Pick the lightest app you will both open, and read budgeting for couples.
  • "Our incomes differ and 50/50 feels wrong." See income-proportional bill splitting and EvenUS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to YNAB?

EveryDollar's free version and Goodbudget's Free Forever plan are the closest in method. Actual Budget is free open-source software with an envelope-style approach, if you are happy to set it up yourself.

Can two people share YNAB on one subscription?

Yes. YNAB says up to six people can share one subscription, each with their own login. Its terms add that all budgets are always shared with the group manager.

Is Monarch or YNAB better for couples?

They suit different couples. YNAB suits couples who want to plan together; Monarch suits couples who want one view of joint and separate accounts with less upkeep. Monarch vs YNAB goes into detail.

Does EvenUS replace YNAB?

No. EvenUS does not budget every dollar or connect to banks. It is for splitting shared costs fairly and seeing how time and chores are shared, and some couples use it alongside a budgeting app.

How we compared them

We read each app's own website or help center and its US App Store listing on 3 November 2026 and only state a fact when both agreed or the app's own page said it. Where they disagreed, such as YNAB's trial length, we give both. Ratings are the US App Store figures shown that day; Google Play stars are left out. We have not run a timed test of these apps. EvenUS facts come from our own feature documentation. If anything here is wrong or out of date, email support@evenus.app.
